The fruit that we grow in the
One Straw Organic Orchards encouraged us to build the Plum Daisy Kitchen on the plum
orchard in Palisade, Colorado, and develop our organic line of Colorado
Mountain Fine Jams & Wine Jellies. But before we dreamed of
constructing a commercial processing kitchen, we were selling the
fruit at farmers markets along Colorado’s Front Range.
Today, the farmers markets remain a
most valuable way of maintaining direct marketing contact with
consumers. Our success at these markets has allowed us to make products,
test them in our sampling program, and make modifications until we
get them “right”.
Dave and Mary Morton of Morton’s
Orchards taught us how to pick ripe fruit and take it to market. We
actually pick the fruit the way you would if you lived on an
orchard and wanted to have a peach for breakfast. The process is
simple, but it takes resources to do this. We pick the fruit one to
two days before we bring it to market in our refrigerated truck.
We sample everything that we sell so
that you know what you are taking home, and we also guarantee
everything that we sell. We actually want people to give us
feedback, and, if you have a problem with anything we sell, we want
you to tell us so that we can make it right. The success of our
farmers markets is our relationship with you.
You can find me at the farmers markets
in Evergreen. My wife
Judith sometimes gets away from her other work to help out, but Harv
and Linda Crow are the two people whom we rely on most as our
primary salespeople at the markets. We hope to see you this summer!
